DATA VISUALIZATION PROJECT, FALL 2019

AFTER TRACKING WEEKS OF PERSONAL DATA REGARDING INSTAGRAM MESSAGES EXCHANGED AND REAL LIFE CONVERSATIONS HELD, THE DATA WAS VISUALIZED AND ANIMATED TO DISPLAY RESULTS OF ANALYZATION.

The black is a visualization of a month in online conversations. The rings represent the type of relationship to each person, the outermost ring being closest friends/family and the inner most ring being complete strangers. My findings of this specific month and research were interesting, I found most of the people I talk with online are acquaintances, people I don’t talk to in real life enough to intentionally spend time with. The dotted lines represent people I actually connected with in person after messaging online.

The beige is a visualization of a month in real life interactions. The rings represent the type of relationship to each person, the outermost ring being closest friends/family and the inner most ring being complete strangers. Most of the outermost rings represent time spent with one or two people. The rest of the diagram is almost solely filled with acquaintances, which I found quite interesting. The dotted lines represent instances I didn’t plan on, or didn’t specify for a certain person or group of people, while the solid lines are instances where I specifically went to see those people.

SKETCHING:

Included in the process was a hefty amount of sketching to determine the best way to design and visualize this data. I chose a bullseye design, hoping to present the relationship levels of each message/conversation in a meaningful way.
